Slide or swing? What are my options?

Swing gates are a rather versatile option often being chosen for the following reasons.

  •  Aesthetics is a main reason for choosing a swing style gate.
  •  Swing style automatic gates have been known for less injury prone incidents having less pinch points as well as the weight of the gate not rolling across a track.
  • They are often much quieter than a rolling style gate without the needed wheel and track setup.
  •  Swing gates will not require a concrete strip for a track like on a rolling gate. Also, a pad is not required for automating if using linear style operators which can sometimes reduce cost.
  •  These swing style automated gates can be mounted in most rough & uneven terrain as it swings over the surface.

Rolling or referred to as Slide gates are a great option with available space.

  •  One of the key benefits of an automatic sliding gate is reliability of the operator. Less moving parts means higher longevity. Slide gate operators can generally accommodate larger width gates requiring one less operator as well as less damage due to external forces (wind, vehicle striking gate etc)
  •  Without being able to push through like on swing style gates, this brings utmost security. This style gate is also not prone to wind damage as a swing gate is. Depending on the design of the gate, swing gates can often require electric locks on linear style to prevent damage to operators due to wind.
  •  Electric slide gates are more affordable as one operator can roll a large opening vs its counter of a swing gate which traditionally gets two operators for a larger opening.
  •  Automatic Slide gates have one main wear part unlike with swing gates being the chain. Maintenance on these are typical chain lubrication and minor adjustments from time to time. Swing gates can need limits readjusted over time as well as lubrication of moving parts.
  •  Less people try to rush through a sliding gate than a swing gate while closing due to the visibility of it sliding directly into a vehicle vs a slow swing in appearance.
  •  No in/out swing direction room needed for open & close. Less prone to striking a vehicle as well as easier application purposes where space may be a vital factor. Ideal in situations where a high sloped driveway would be a factor or landscaping that would be directly in the way of a swing direction. Though can still be used, the swing would generally end up opening into approaching vehicles giving a slide gate an ideal scenario.
